Removal of Rhododendron

This week we have spent a couple of days removing Rhododendron at Penshaw Wood.

Rhododendron is native to the Himalayas and was introduced to England as a garden plant, spreading to many woodlands areas. It is an invasive plant and prevents other species from growing by creating a very shaded woodland floor. As part of the management plan for the area it was necessary to remove a section of this non-native species to try and encourage other native species to grow.
