Meet the Rangers!

Name: Gareth Wilson

Job title: Area Ranger – North York Moors, Coast & Durham properties

About: In 2004 I decided to leave my job in IT to try and get a career in conservation. In the following few years I volunteered and worked for a few different environmental organisations to build up my experience. In 2008 I landed my dream job, working for the Trust in the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Coast and County Durham and have never looked back!

When I’m not working, you can usually find me running through the hills around Guisborough where I live. I regularly do marathons, triathlons and other races and like to train every day.

I also really love being outside and enjoying nature. You’ll often find me wandering around a nature reserve with a pair of binoculars seeing what I can see.

Favourite National Trust property: Roseberry Topping.

About: I have been involved with the Trust for over 18 years, first volunteering when I was 14 years old. I have spent the last 15 years working in Forestry and Arboriculture.

Outside of work I am a big motorsports fan, driving in the British Off Road Championships and Lotus Cup, and collecting British Classic and American Classic cars and Landrovers. I also love Black Route Mountain Biking and American Kenpo Karate.

I live on a smallholding with lots of dogs, chickens, geese, ducks, goats and sheep!

Favourite National Trust property: Moorhouse and Malygill Woods.

Name: Kate Phillips

Job title: Ranger – North York Moors, Coast & Durham properties

About: I grew up in the Yorkshire Dales and until my twenties I took the beautiful British countryside for granted. When I realised there was work to be done managing and promoting the outdoors, I realised what I wanted to do.

Outside of work, I like going to new places and having good times with my friends and family. This usually involves food, of which I am a massive fan.

Favourite National Trust property: Penshaw Monument and Wood – there’s something for everyone there!

Name
: Chris Wood

Job title: Academy Ranger – North York Moors, Coast & Durham properties

About: I am over 18 months into my training under the National Trust’s Academy Ranger Training programme and absolutely love it!

Most of the time I’m out and about getting my hands dirty gaining practical experience, but I’m required to shoot off to Reaseheath College in Cheshire every now and again to complete a qualification in countryside management.

I love walking and wildlife, and keep a diary of where I go and what I see at http://www.wanderingwoody.wordpress.com

Before entering the world of rangering, I used to play the drums in a punk rock band called The Misled Heroes. We toured up and down the UK and supported bands such as the Buzzcocks and The Enemy.

Favourite National Trust property: Roseberry Topping.
