Chick chick chick chick checking!

Last week the team carried out the first nest box survey of the year at Penshaw Wood. It’s good to see familiar birds like Blue tit and Great tit settling in making nests, about half already sitting on eggs.

We will be updating in the coming weeks as we continue to survey here and also at Roseberry Topping, hopefully with good news of successful hatching and with some pictures!

On a seperate note, Penshaw Wood is great for a short walk at this time of year. The ground is covered with a range of woodland species and filled with the scent of Ramsons (wild garlic). It’s especially good to see wild flowers coming up where we’ve cleared Rhododendron, they’ve been just waiting beneath the soil for the opportunity to spring up!
