Name: Gareth Wilson
Job title: Area Ranger – North York Moors
About: In 2004 I decided to leave my job in IT to try and get a career in conservation. In the following few years I volunteered and worked for a few different environmental organisations to build up my experience. In 2008 I landed my dream job, working for the Trust in the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Coast and County Durham and have never looked back!
When I’m not working, you can usually find me running through the hills around Guisborough where I live. I regularly do marathons, triathlons and other races and like to train every day.
I also really love being outside and enjoying nature. You’ll often find me wandering around a nature reserve with a pair of binoculars seeing what I can see.

Job Title: Academy Ranger – North York Moors
About: Started volunteering for the National Trust shortly after leaving university. I wasn’t really a countryside person until moving to the foot of the Ingleby Incline near Ingleby Greenhow two years ago (by the way walking up the incline and over to Urra moor is a lovely walk).
I have a great deal of interest in sports including basketball, NFL (American football for all you rookies) and I have a real passion for snowboarding since taking it up at university and will spend most of my money on going to ski resorts.
Favourite National Trust Property: Bridestones Nature Reserve
Job title: Ranger – North York Moors
I started off as an Academy Ranger here from 2011 – 2013, and after spending two years in Cornwall working for the National Trust on their Lanhydrock estate, I have now returned.
I have a huge passion for British wildlife, and feel incredibly privileged to be able to work in this field, helping to protect and share the wonders of the natural world.

Name: Kate Phillips
Job title: Ranger – North York Moors, Coast & Durham countryside properties. November 2010 – June 2014
About: I grew up in the Yorkshire Dales and until my twenties I took the beautiful British countryside for granted. When I realised there was work to be done managing and promoting the outdoors, I realised what I wanted to do.
Outside of work, I like going to new places and having good times with my friends and family. This usually involves food, of which I am a massive fan.
Favourite National Trust property: Penshaw Monument and Wood – there’s something for everyone there!
Update: Kate has now moved on to work with the Yorkshire Wildlfe Trust as a Reserves Manager, It was a pleasure to work with her and we all wish her the best.
